Colourful Chemistry (Organic)
Following chemical reaction to be performed under expert supervision for safety.
Deep violet colour
Heat Michler’ Ketone with N,N – Dimethylaniline in presence of POCl3 or COCl2
Dissolve Phenolphthalein in Ethanol (Normal Alcohol) .
Add alkali –Pink Colour
Add acid –becomes colourless
Heat Phthalic and Catechol in presence of Sulphuric Acid at 180 degree centigrade
Reduce Indigio with Sodium Dithionite in presence of Sodium Hydroxide - It transforms into Indigo white. Expose to Air-It transforms into Blue Colour.
Victor Meyer Test
Treat Ethyl Alcohol at room temperature with Sodium Dichromate in Sulphuric Acid (Orange Solution)
Orange to Green
1°Nitroalkane reacts with nitrous acid and then it is dissolved in NaOH solution of Red Colour.
2° Nitroalkane reacts with nitrous acid to form Blue coloured product.
A little dilute nitric acid is added to a few crystals of Uric Acid and reaction mixture is evaporated to dryness. The residue becomes Purple on the addition of ammonia.
